At Par 4 the Fam, we’re all about easy, fun, and family-approved meals that tie into the game we love. So in honor of Father’s Day—and my favorite Pittsburgh native—we served up a twist on a Steel City classic with The Iron Lie Casserole.
Inspired by the legendary Primanti Bros. sandwich, this baked version has all the stacked flavors you love—meat, cheese, slaw, fries, and tomatoes—but in an easy, layered casserole that’s perfect for feeding your foursome (plus a few fans).
Why We Call It The Iron Lie
In golf, a “lie” refers to how the ball rests—and trust me, this one’s loaded. It’s a little messy, a lot delicious, and built layer by layer just like a classic Primanti… only better, because you can bake it and walk away while the oven does the work.
The Iron Lie Casserole
Ingredients:
- 1 (Day Old) loaf thick-cut Italian bread, diced (bread knife here)
- 1/2 cup beef broth (kitchen measuring set)
- Sliced deli meat (pastrami or roast beef)
- Provolone cheese
- Tomato slices
- Classic vinegar-based slaw (mandoline slicer )
- Frozen French fries (crinkle or shoestring work best)
- Optional: spicy mustard or banana peppers for topping
Instructions:
- Prep the base: Dice your bread and spread in a greased casserole dish. Pour beef broth evenly over the bread to moisten.
- Layer it up: Add a layer of sliced meat, then tomatoes, provolone cheese, slaw, and top with fries.
- Bake: Place in a 350°F oven for about 40 minutes, or until fries are golden and crispy.
- Serve: Slice it up and serve warm with a side of pickles—or an ice-cold beverage at your 19th hole.
